Upgrading your Silhouette Software on a new computer when you've used all 3 of your installs

Don't you feel like this guy when you try to upgrade your Silhouette Studio software and you get one of the above messages?  Frustrating, isn't it?  Here's are a few tips that will save you some angst when reinstalling your software on a new computer.

When you purchase a Designer Edition or other upgrade for your Studio software, you can install it on up to 3 computers.  So, say you had your software on 2 computers and you had to replace one -- you've used up all 3 of your installs.  You will get an error message when you try to upgrade on any additional new computer because you have no more installs left.

How do you know how many installs you have left?  Log into your account at and click on "My Account".  Scroll down, and you will find your serial numbers as well as how many installs you have left for each type of upgrade you have. (You will need your upgrade serial number when you reinstall, so write it down or leave the window open on your computer.)

So what happens when your "Remaining Installs" number is zero?  Before you donate, trash, or otherwise retire your old computer, open your Silhouette software one last time and click on "Help". Click on "De-activate License Key".  Your "remaining installs" will be reset and you can now use that license key when you install the upgrade on your new computer.

If you can't access your software on your old computer, just give Silhouette a call at 1-800-859-8243 or email them at , explain the situation, and they will reset your installs.  Sometimes they get very busy, so rather than sit on hold, I use the option to have them call me when an agent is available.  I've always gotten a call back within a few hours.

Happy cutting!

Happy New Year!

I've had a busy couple of weeks (months, really) with everyone busy crafting for Christmas and requesting custom designs.  Things slowed down a little bit, but now I find myself creating custom Valentine's Day and Mardi Gras designs.  It's always fun to turn someone's vision into a design, then to see it come to life on a shirt, coffee mug, Onesie, etc.  I always appreciate it when people include pictures of their finished projects along with their review of their purchase!  This cute shirt was created by Kellie of KellieAllisonDesigns using my Open Heart Circle Monogram Frame design:

Open Heart Circle Monogram frame and Vine Monogram Alphabet files available at

It was apparent that everyone was busy monogramming for gift giving based on the number of questions I got, asking how to use some of my monogram files -- namely, DXF files.  DXF files can be used by people with the basic, free, edition of Silhouette Studio software.  They can be tricky and a little frustrating, especially for beginners who don't know all the ins and outs of their software yet. They require a few extra steps to make them work properly so you don't lose the "holes" of your letters when welding them.  So I made a quick video to show how to work with my monogram files in Silhouette Studio using DXF format.

If you want to avoid all the extra steps needed to use DXF files, you can upgrade your software to Designer Edition (DE), which will allow you to open SVG files. SVG files come into your software ready to use, arrange, and weld without any extra steps. (You may have to add the cut lines before you cut.)

Designer Edition retails for $49.99.  I discount them 30% to $34.99.  You can purchase an instant download code for DE upgrade at my Etsy shop,  Click on "Silhouette Products" in the shop sections.  If they are sold out, please send me a message and I can get one listed for you.

Here's hoping you all have a wonderful 2016 filled with lots of crafting!

NEW Designer Edition PLUS has arrived!

NEW Designer Edition PLUS has arrived!

If you own an embroidery machine, you will be very interested in this upgrade!
I'm so excited about it, I can hardly contain myself!
Hello friends,

I am beyond excited to share this news with you -- Silhouette has come out with an upgrade to their software that allows us to OPEN EMBROIDERY DESIGNS!  Yes, you read that right!  Open any applique embroidery design and pretty much instantly make a cut file out of the placement line right from your embroidery design.  I have to admit that I was a little skeptical, but I just updated and immediately opened an applique design and was cutting within seconds.  Yes, seconds!  It's so easy, you don't even need instructions!  (But in case you're an instructions-kinda-person... here's what you do... open your embroidery design.  Delete everything except the placement line. Cut. Stitch. You're done.)

I am in the process of getting them listed on my website and Etsy shop, so you will have your very own updated software very soon!  But before you buy, please continue reading about the new upgrades so you know exactly what to buy depending on what you already have.

First, please know that there is a difference between an upGRADE and an upDATE.  I only mention this because you will need to do both.  An upgrade is typically paid for and usually adds major features to your software.  And update is typically free and fixes bugs and allows your upgrade to work properly.  For this upGRADE, you will need to upDATE your software to the latest version at the SilhouetteAmerica website.  As of this writing, the latest version is 3.6.39.  You will need at least that version number to use the new features after you upgrade.

There are now 4 versions of Designer Edition upgrades, so make sure you know what you have before you buy.  To check your version number, open your Studio software and click on "Help" then "About Silhouette Studio".  There, you will see the version number that you're currently running.

If your software version number ends in "ssde", you currently have the Designer Edition and you will need to purchase the upgrade from DE to Plus for $19.99 (reg. $24.99).

If your version number does not end in ssde, you will need to purchase the full DE Plus upgrade for $52.99 (reg. $74.99).

OR --  if you want the Designer Edition without the Plus features, you can upgrade for $34.99 (reg. 49.99).

Confused yet?????  But wait, there's more!

If you have the Business Edition (your version number will end in "ssbe"), you don't need to buy anything -- just update your software and you will have all the features of DE PLUS!

So to recap:

First, everyone should update their software at  (scroll about 3/4 of the way down until you see "Updates", then choose Mac or PC).

Then, decide what upgrade version you want/need:

 - Designer Edition Upgrade - $34.99 (reg. $49.99)
 - Designer Edition PLUS Full Upgrade - $52.99 (reg. $74.99)
 - Designer Edition to PLUS- $19.99 (reg. $24.99)
 - Business Edition - $99.99 (I do not stock this, but if you're interested, LMK)
 - Business Edition to PLUS = FREE!  (Just update your software.)

PS, If I'm sold out at Etsy or my website, please send me a message.  I can send you a Paypal invoice and once that's paid, I will email you your code to unlock all the DE Plus Goodness!

Brandied Apricots and a Free SVG Label

Summer fruit is in full swing here in Virginia, and after having just gone through a complete kitchen renovation, I felt the need to use all my shiny, new appliances and preserve some of the goodness of summer.  I visited a local farmers market and scored a great deal on 1/2 bushel of apricots and 1/2 bushel of peaches. Apricot and peach preserves were on the to-do list, but do you even know what a half-bushel of fruit looks like?  Well, it's a LOT!

I quickly determined that 20+ jars of apricot preserves is more than two people can eat in a reasonable amount of time, even taking into consideration that many of them will probably be given as gifts.  So I searched the internet for other things to do with apricots and came across this recipe for Brandied Apricots.  It was super easy to make and OH, SO TASTY!  As I usually do with recipes, I changed it up slightly.  I added a splash of orange and almond extract and also added a split vanilla bean to each jar to make it pretty and taste even better!

I highly recommend warming in the microwave and topping some vanilla ice cream, or my favorite, Talenti Tahitian Vanilla Bean Gelato.  Plus, I think it will get better with age as the apricots soak up all that Brandy goodness, but honestly, I'm not sure it'll last that long in my house!

So what does all this have to do with your Silhouette Cameo or Cricut?  Of course I had to make a pretty label!  And I am sharing it with you.

This label is perfect for these awesome jars that I found here.  Don't let the lids scare you -- they sealed just fine in a regular water bath just like the Mason jars do with the band lids.  And if by chance one or two of them don't seal, just pop them back in the water bath!

Click here to grab your FREE SVG file.  I put as many labels as would fit on my Silhouette Studio mat, added registration marks and printed on Silhouette's Printable Adhesive Kraft Paper then cut.

Happy canning and cutting (and eating!)
